Job Responsibilities

The Maintenance of Way (MOW) welder will safely, accurately, and efficiently, maintain, service, and repair SCFE tracks, switches and rail components in a fast paced, team based, and constantly changing work environment. The Welder will be responsible to ensure compliance with all federal and railroad rules and regulations for safety. Also, this position requires a safe-minded individual who is able to work efficiently, independently, and well with others. This candidate will be responsible for the proper railroad track, field and component welding and installation, inspection, repairs as well as grinding. Furthermore, the Welder is in charge of railroad welding procedures, rail adjustment (distressing), rail installation as well as minor maintenance and repairs of track and work equipment. This candidate will also be responsible for in and out of track thermite welding, rail distressing, manages turnout component welding, maintenance grinding, and frog repairs as required.

Job Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must have positive results from Company-designated tests designed to measure basic skills, job skills, mechanical aptitude and/or other interests, skills and characteristics.
  • Must have the ability to perform job functions such as:
    • Ability to troubleshoot, maintain and repair railroad tracks, switches, frogs and equipment pertaining to the SCFE Railroad Maintenance of Way.
    • Ensure compliance with all SCFE and FRA railroad rules and regulations for safe welding operations.
    • Effectively solve work related problems, make in-field decisions, and provide pertinent work information upon request.
    • Must be able to maintain detailed records of maintenance activities as well as complete work orders using the computerized maintenance system (SAP).
    • Ability to properly Electro-stick, Mig-wire, thermite, and component weld.
    • Ability to properly grind rail, switch and frog components using the appropriate grinder (profile, hand) and grinding stone.
    • Ability to safely use a propane torch, acetylene-oxygen torch and related equipment.
    • Ability to properly install, replace or repair rail either in jointed or CWR track. 
    • Ability to correctly install, replace or repair track components.
    • Ability to adjust rail and distress track according to company CWR policy.
    • Operate mobile equipment as well as various lifting devices including following proper rigging procedures.
    • Heavy lifting, climbing, squatting, working from heights and standing for extended periods.
    • Use and read tape measure and other related measuring instruments and devices as well as read and understand welding and shop manuals and parts books.
    • Able and motivated to listen, learn, gain experience and good judgment as well as follow accepted industry repair standards, in order to plan and accomplish a variety of tasks with minimal supervision.
    • Operate and read various pressure gauges, multi-meters and flow meters.
    • Perform mathematical calculations pertaining to the job.
    • Must actively and effectively assist team members as required
  • Must have a minimum of five (5) years previous railroad track experience.
  • Must be Certified in Thermite welding. 
  • Must be Certified in welding track components.
  • Must be Qualified to install, maintain, adjust and weld CWR rail in accordance with railroad CWR policy. 
  • Must have successfully passed the Roadway Worker Test with a minimum score of 85%.
  • Must have successfully passed the Railroad Operating and Safety Rules with a minimum score of 85%.
  • Must have a valid CDL Class A driver’s license with Tanker endorsement.
  • Must have mechanical skills to perform maintenance and assist in repairs on track and work equipment.
  • Must have ability to learn how to:
    • Repair and Weld Frogs
    • Repair and Weld Switch Points
    • Repair and Weld Rail (Field Weld)
  • Ability to work anywhere within the company and in variable/extreme weather conditions.
  • Ability to work with others and or alone with minimum supervision.
  • Ability to read, speak and write English
  • Ability to follow instructions and communicate information pertaining to the job.
  • Ability to coordinate work and communicate with Railroad Operations.
  • Ability to follow proper safety and housekeeping procedures pertaining to the area.
  • This position may be required to work nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime.

Working Conditions:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee works and drives in outside weather conditions on a regular basis.
  • Working conditions may be rainy, hot, humid, dusty, foggy etc. depending on the weather and may be at night time.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
  • Duties of this job are also performed in an office environment.
  • Employee is also required to drive a vehicle for extended time periods

     Physical Requirements:

  • The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, use hands to handle and/or move various objects, tools and/or controls, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, talk, hear, and see.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • This position may be required to work nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime.
  • Ability to operate and use all equipment necessary and use common office equipment.
  • Ability to move or handle various items generally weighing between 0-75 pounds. Ability to lift and carry up to 75 pounds.
