Job Responsibilities

Position requires a safe-minded individual who is able to work efficiently, independently, and well with others. This candidate will be responsible for performing manual labor, routine maintenance, construction work on the railroad track, bridges and right of way. Maintaining and repairing track to be within safe operating condition by checking for and repairing broken rails, defective switches, deteriorating track, track obstructions and weather-related problems. This candidate will also be responsible for posting time and other pertinent information in SAP, changing rail, ties, and other railroad components; as well as perform other work assigned. The Trackman will also be responsible for the safe operation of hand tools, which include, Spike-Mule, Sledge Hammer, Claw Bar, Lining Bar, Track Wrench, Track Jack, and various hydraulic tools.      

Job Requirements


  • Safely assist crew members with track maintenance as needed
  • Comply with all railroad and FRA rules and regulations
  • You will be asked to follow posted bulletins, regulations, rule books, timetables, switch lists, etc.
  • Work with others and or alone with minimum supervision
  • Follow instructions and communicate information pertaining to the job


  • You must complete mandated training related to safety, company policies and work procedures.
  • Ability to read, speak and write English
  • Ability to understand railroad safety procedures
  • Ability to follow proper safety and housekeeping procedures pertaining to the area
  • Ability to work the posted schedule with overtime as necessary
  • Have a valid Driver’s License, Class E or above

Working Conditions:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee works and drives in outside weather conditions on a regular basis.
  • Working conditions may be rainy, hot, humid, dusty, foggy etc. depending on the weather and may be at night time
  • May be required to work weekends and holidays as needed
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud 
  • Duties of this job are also performed in an office and shop environment
  • Employee is also required to drive a vehicle for extended time periods

Physical Requirements:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand and walk for long periods of time.
  • The employee is frequently required to use hands to handle and/or move various objects, tools and/or controls, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, talk, hear, and see
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Visibility must extend to 62’ and beyond.
  • This position is required to be on-call which could happen at night where job tasks and operating equipment must be performed.
  • Ability to operate and use all on-track equipment necessary and use common office equipment
  • Ability to move or handle various items generally weighing between 0-75 pounds. Ability to lift and carry up to 75 pounds.
